X, formerly known as Twitter, seems to be experimenting with a new feature that allows users to downvote posts on the platform. This feature, which is currently being tested on the iPhone, may appear as a ‘dislike’ option in the form of a heartbroken icon. The experiment first came to light in 2021, and recent code discoveries suggest that testing is still ongoing.

Social media users have been buzzing about the potential introduction of a downvoting option on X. User @aaronp613 posted about the discovery, mentioning code references that hint at a heartbroken emoji-style icon for dislikes. The coding also includes strings of text asking users if they want to downvote a post, adding to the speculation about the upcoming feature.

X had initially announced the testing of a downvoting feature on iOS back in 2021. The feature was part of a research experiment that included both upvote and downvote options for replies. However, the platform clarified that downvotes were not public, unlike likes, which were visible to all users until a recent update hid them from view.

Despite the speculation around the downvoting option, a video clip posted by user @P4mui suggests that the feature is only available for replies and not for posts on the platform. Additionally, X recently made a decision to hide ‘likes’ from the platform, meaning that posts liked by a user will no longer be visible on their profile under a separate likes tab. These changes are just a few of the alterations introduced since Elon Musk took over the platform in 2022.

The potential introduction of a downvoting feature on X raises questions about how users will interact with content on the platform. While some users may welcome the option to express dislikes, others may be concerned about the impact on engagement and overall user experience. It remains to be seen how X will implement and regulate the downvoting feature, as well as how users will adapt to these changes in the future.
