The ongoing conflict between Elon Musk’s satellite internet firm Starlink and Brazil’s telecommunications regulator, Anatel, has reached a critical point. The confrontation stems from Brazil’s decision to block Musk’s social media company, X, which has escalated into a public feud between the billionaire and the authorities.
Last week, Brazil’s supreme court ordered a nationwide suspension of X for failing to appoint a legal representative as mandated by the court. The ruling was upheld by a panel of federal supreme court justices, leading Anatel to instruct internet providers to block access to X. Artur Coimbra, a commissioner at Anatel, revealed that Starlink is the only company refusing to comply with the court decision, prompting an investigation into the potential noncompliance of Starlink and other network operators.
Anatel has warned of possible sanctions against Starlink if it continues to defy the court order. These sanctions could range from fines to the withdrawal of the company’s license to operate in Brazil. The regulator is making it clear that noncompliance with Brazilian laws will not be tolerated, setting the stage for a potential showdown between Starlink and the authorities.
