However, the majority of content on Instagram today is vertical, with users typically uploading in a 4:3 aspect ratio for photos and 9:16 for videos. Cropping this content to fit into a square can be challenging and may not showcase the content as intended by the user.

The change to a vertical grid format may disrupt users who meticulously align their content to fit the square grid before posting. Mosseri acknowledged this concern and expressed his hope to manage the transition effectively. In 2022, tipster Alessandro Paluzzi first noticed the potential for vertical profile grids on Instagram, suggesting that users might have the option to switch between a square grid and a 4:5 format.
