The U.K. government responded strongly to Elon Musk’s recent comments regarding the riots taking place across the country. Musk’s statement on X, a social media platform he owns, stating “Civil war is inevitable” was met with condemnation by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The government emphasized that there is no justification for such comments, calling the riots organized illegal thuggery that has no place in society.
Heidi Alexander, the U.K.’s courts minister, responded to Musk’s comments by emphasizing the importance of social media responsibility. She stated that individuals with a platform on social media should behave responsibly and that language associating the riots with civil war is unjustified. The U.K.’s technology minister, Peter Kyle, has also engaged in conversations with social media companies to address the sharing of misinformation in relation to the riots.
The Online Safety Act, a landmark law in the U.K. aimed at regulating harmful content on the internet, was passed last year. However, the regulator tasked with enforcing the law, Ofcom, does not yet have all the necessary powers to take action against social media firms for harmful posts inciting the ongoing riots. They are working towards implementing the act quickly so it can be enforced as soon as possible to tackle the dissemination of misleading and inflammatory content online.
Elon Musk, known for being the CEO of Tesla, continued to comment on the U.K. riots even after facing criticism. He shared a video on social media showing a man being arrested in relation to offensive comments shared on a Facebook page. Musk has also allowed far-right figure Tommy Robinson and controversial online personality Andrew Tate back onto his social media platform, X, despite previous suspensions. Robinson, who was banned from Twitter in 2018, is among the individuals given a platform by Musk.
