Apple has recently come to a tentative collective bargaining contract with the first unionized company store in the United States. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ Coalition of Organized Retail Employees, which represents the employees at a retail location in Maryland, shared the news on Friday evening. The three-year deal includes an average pay increase of 10% along with additional benefits for the workers. However, the agreement still needs to be approved by approximately 85 employees at the store, which is located in Towson, a Baltimore suburb. A vote is set for August 6th to finalize the decision.

The union’s negotiating committee expressed their satisfaction with the tentative agreement, stating that it gives their members a say in their future and marks a promising first step towards additional gains. They see this as a foundation to build upon for improved conditions across Apple stores. Apple has not yet issued a statement regarding the contract, leaving the response from the tech giant unknown at this time.

The Maryland store becomes one of only two unionized Apple sites in the country, following the successful union vote in June 2022. This development precedes a similar occurrence at a second Apple location in Oklahoma City, where employees also opted for union representation through the Communications Workers of America. However, unlike the Maryland store, the second site has not yet reached a formal contract with Apple. It is interesting to note that while various unions have won high-profile elections in recent times, securing contracts has proven to be a more challenging task.

The upcoming vote on the collective bargaining agreement at the Maryland Apple store will mark a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve working conditions for Apple employees. This achievement demonstrates the increasing interest and support for union representation in the tech industry. As the landscape of labor relations continues to evolve, it will be essential to monitor the outcomes of these developments and their implications for both workers and employers.
